Some 12th century frescoes were discovered under a layer of mortar of 17th century frescoes in the church of Béréstovo, when restoration of the latter frescoes was undertaken. Restorers of the Kiev workshop in collaboration with the staff of the Central Special Research Institute evolved a method of detaching the mortar carrying the 12th and 17th century frescoes and transferring the 17th century mortar and fresco onto a new support. Fifteen steps used in detaching, transferring and stabilizing are listed.
