Abstract
A summary is given of the third lecture in honor of Francis Walton, Director Emeritus of the Gennadius Library, Athens, Greece, which was presented by three speakers in the Gennadeion on April 13, 1984, on the subject of the conservation of the monuments of the Acropolis. The speakers were Dr. Touloupa, Dr. Papanikolaou, and Dr. Korres. The proposal for the restoration of the Erechtheion was presented in 1977 after two years of study for review by international specialists. International conferences were held for the Erechtheion in 1977 and for the Parthenon in 1983. Financial resources for the preservation work on the Acropolis are mentioned including the establishment of an international laboratory for the conservation of stone. Preservation activities since 1979 include the Erechtheion, the Propylaia, and the natural rock of the Acropolis hill. The site for a new museum has been located to accomodate more of the Acropolis material. The early reconstruction attempts on the Erechtheion were reviewed and the modern reconstruction described. The history of alteration and destructive interventions on the Parthenon was given as well as the current reconstruction program for the Parthenon. A film by Mr. Vrettakos followed the lectures showing the removal of the Caryatid statues from the Erechtheion to the Acropolis Museum. -- AATA
