The author gives examples illustrating the need for microscopic and chemical research in identifying color on facades, with reference to work carried out in Yugoslavia. Points out the importance of collecting samples, their preservation, and documentation, since it is common practice to remove old facades and reconstruct them with new materials. The samples thus represent the only original remains.
