Abstract
Exhibition of original documents, books, and artifacts in libraries and archives can pose risks to these materials, but there can also be conservation benefits in a well-run program. Items selected for exhibition may receive a condition review, rehousing or conservation treatment. Some exhibition support systems can be retained for improved long-term storage. Possible exhibition- related hazards are discusses including light damage, exposure to gaseous pollutants and increased fluctuation of temperature and relative humidity and physical damage from handling inadequate support, vibration and transport. Guidelines are suggested for the safe light exposure of archival and library materials.
