Abstract
In Japan, gilding has a long history dating back about thirteen centuries. This paper focuses on three topics: the techniques of manufacturing gold leaf; the preparation of various grounds and of methods of applying gold leaf to them; and the deterioration and consequent conservation treatments given two Buddhas, one from the Heian period, the other from the Kamakura period.
