Abstract
Systematic biology research is essential to the development of evolutionary theory, is symbiotically linked to molecular biology, has many applications to human concerns such as to agriculture, medicine, industry, and, not least, to policy issues such as the maintenance of biodiversity. Can such a necessary part of science undergo a decline? If so, why and what should be done? A case study related to a country with some important collections will be described.
