Abstract
In the United States, we have become too quick to turn to the legislative process to achieve desired goals. Merely passing a law does not assure success. Changes come about only when the public is convinced that a cause has merit. Winning and keeping public confidence require careful attention to the role of ethical standards. Expectations from the law in the area of furthering conservation goals are discussed. Professional organizations should give more attention to ethical standards in order to accelerate the achievement of goals
