Abstract
Briefly examines some of the problems of archaeological pottery and the suggested solutions to these problems. Compares 8 soaking methods for the removal of water soluble salts. The best method was found to be soaking with changes of water, agitation and heat. Describes: the poultice method for salt removal from friable pottery: the impregnation of friable pottery with a consolidant painting and soaking; the removal of lime incrustations: cleaning iron stained ceramics. 6 references.
