Abstract
Describes the work done in Mexico in stucco conservation, the term stucco referring to mixtures of lime compounds and sand or other additions. It is an ever-present surface coating of much Mesoamerican archaeological structures. The vast quantity of material that needs preservation is one of the main difficulties in this field. Another is the wet tropical climate. An early measure to preserve stucco was to build shelters for protection against sun and rain. The modern methods include resurfacing and binding; injecting mixtures to fill cavities; consolidation; fixing the polychromy; applying biocides. Their applications are described, and proposals for alternative solutions offered.
