Abstract
The Mayan temple in Chiapas (Mexico) was discovered in 1946 and since then various proposals had been made on the conservation of its murals. Early recommendation suggested the removal of the paintings but fortunately this was not carried out however a rain shelter was erected. Deterioration was the result of heat and humidity which caused flora and microflora growth and a thick layer of crystallized carbonates. Tools with diamond bits proved to be the best and fastest equipment for removing this. Plaster which was detached from thr walls was reinforced by the injection of calcium ceseinate. Colour integration work was carried out, in some areas Paraloid B-72 was applied but later removed as it proved unsuitable in the climatic conditions. Restoration work and research contnue.
