Abstract
The Pacatnamu Project in Peru involves Peruvian and North American archaeologists, anthropologists, scientific experts, and the author, a textile conservator. The climate of this remote site (650 kilometers from Lima) is mild and arid. Thus far excavations have yielded nearly 2000 textiles including tapestry-woven fragments with complex iconography, miniature textiles representing a variety of garments, and burial shrouds. The modifications of standard museum and laboratory procedures necessitated by the remoteness of the site for immediate in situ treatment of the textiles are described. Their storage in muslin bags prior to treatment is also documented. Field treatment given a number of single pieces is detailed. The iconography is interpreted, and provides information on human activity at the site. See also AATA 24-921 for reference to the same project.
