Abstract
A nondestructive approach of acidity detection of paper using a pH meter with antimony-silver/AgCl composite flat-end electrodes, was conducted following TAPPI standard T529. Tests were conducted on a number of archive records currently stored in the Provincial Archives of Shaxi, dated from 1847-1981. Preliminary conclusions are drawn on the correlation of natural deterioration, storage age, papermaking method, and paper acidity. Durability was also tested on 80 g/m2 offset papers with different acid contents. Results observed suggest that the optimum pH should be 6.5-8.5. -- AATA
