Abstract
Pichwais are paintings on cloth used as decorative hangings in temples. This paper describes the treatment of a pichwai in the National Research Laboratory for Conservation at Lucknow. It was 6 x 6 feet in size. When received for treatment, it was badly folded and creased, was acidic and showed signs of paint flaking. It was first fumigated and the paint layer protected with a spray of 1.5% polyvinyl acetate in benzene. Deacidification of the cloth was done with barium hydroxide in methyl alcohol. A new support of a thin, unbleached cotton fabric was given using starch paste. -- AATA
