Abstract
Using the example of a half-timbered building in Halle, it is shown that the costs for renovation can be lower than for new construction. This is achieved by retaining as much as possible of the existing building. A tempering system was installed in the uninsulated half-timbered building. The use of tempering has two goals. Because the building will be protected from moisture rising in the walls, the installation of horizontal barriers under the thresholds and the wooden flooring can be avoided. The building is heated through careful placement of the tempering loops in the plaster of the outside walls (along the thresholds and in the corners of the building with extension loops on both sides of the windows). The energy losses from airing are low because tempering is radiation heating. The installation of new “super tight†windows with insulating glass is not necessary; the old windows can be adapted. Not only the capital costs but also the energy requirements are lower with tempering than with conventional heating.
