Natural History museums were largely concieved of as institutions of exploration of a largely unaltered natural world. The massive environmental problems and accelerating rate of human induced extinctions are forcing museums to reexamine their role. Research important to understanding and protecting biological diversity represents an imperative no other institutions can undertake. Museums also represent some of the major institutions where people can learn about what is happening to the natural world and what can be done about it.
