Abstract
Techniques and procedures used in the preparation of cadavers and specimens for use in anatomy and pathology teaching labs have undergone little change until recently. Some techniques have proven to be effective over time others often have involved the use of chemicals and processes harmful to both the user and the specimen. It is only with the advent of new techniques that these older methods are being challenged. Changes in embalming formulas, the establishment of new storage and holding solutions for fixed material, and proper morgue and laboratory design, have worked hand-in-hand to mimimize risks to users. Other techniques such as freeze-drying, embedding of specimens in acrylic resins, and plastination of whole cadavers and organs with silicone and epoxy resins are other new techniques that have proven useful.
