Abstract
The collections of recent malacofauna in the Croatian Natural History Museum in Zagreb excel in quality and quantity. However, they are inadequately housed and also are subject to being moved frequently. The storage is subject to fluctuating environmental conditions, and dust and other pollutants from visitor traffic. The mollusk shells also show damage in the form of white crystals coating their surface, a process whose last stages lead to complete destruction of the shells. The author suggests that: 1) collections of recent malacofauna be housed apart from the permanent display and under stable microclimatological conditions; 2) the malacological material be kept in containers with transparent lids that can be firmly closed to prevent mixing with material of different inventory numbers when whole drawers are moved; 3) it be established which materials are most suitable for the storage and preservation of mollusks; and 4) information from different museums concerning the storage and maintenance of mollusk collections be exchanged and studied.
