Abstract
A multidisciplinary investigation program was begun some years ago for the conservation and protection of the Christian catacombs on Melos island, excavated in a very loose volcanic rock of pumice tuff. Serious damage to the monument and the intense progressive decay of the rock made it necessary to execute geotechnical analyses (geological mapping, inventory of the rock discontinuities, systematic sampling, sampling boreholes and permeability tests, water tracing, petrographic study and chemical analyses etc.). The results of this research program have been evaluated, especially concerning the mechanism and the factors which act on the rock and lead to intense loosening and disintegration, in order to permit the formulation of appropriate conservation measures.
