Abstract
A late-6th-century BC Greek calyx krater was restored. The ancient fragments bear the signature of the noted red-figure painter Euphronios, and comprise some 25% of the original piece. Because a traditional plaster of Paris reconstruction was considered unsuitable, a new technique was developed to fabricate a shell composed of epoxy resin and acrylic paste into which the fragments could be inserted. The measurements for the reconstruction were determined from those of the original fragments. Templates of the internal and external contours of the vase were mounted on a rotating device and turned in sequence to model the various layers of the shell. The finished product is both physically and aesthetically compatible with the original.
