Abstract
This report documents the results of Phase II, the evaluation of new and artificially-aged modern papers deacidified by AKZO/DEZ, FMC/MC3 and the Wei T'o processes. Data collected include the quantity and distribution of buffer reserve (as determined by scanning electron microscopy, atomic absorption, and titration), pH (both surface and cold extratction); degree of polymerization (DP) of cellulose; and physical measurements (dry and wet zero span tensile strength, water absorbency, colour) of five treated papers, as well as identification of problems specific to each treatment. The relative permanence of papers treated by the three deacidification processes was evaluated by comparing data obtained before and after ageing. The report provides a detailed account of the results and draws some interim conclusions concerning the effects of the studied deacidification methods.
