Abstract
This scientific article describes exhaustive chemical, spectro-graphic and microscopic analyses of The Lady of Baza, a polychromatic 6-foot stone sculpture unearthed at Cepera a Baza (Grenada), Spain, believed to date from the 4th century A.D. The author provides detailed chemical analyses of the different dyes used on the sculpture. Deploring the use of shellac initially used in an attempt to halt the deterioration of the paints, the author discusses in detail and recommends techniques for this example of ancient art.
