The concept of hardness in its broadest sense has been extended to cover extremely small optical dimensions through the concept of microhardness. Although the complex hardness number represents a summation of highly diverse material properties, varying in their comparative effect, many laboratories and, above all, metallurgical research laboratories, consider this measurement indispensable or would feel severely handicapped without it.
