The following factors have been determined to be important in identifying abandoned Aleut settlement sites: The availability of a fresh water supply; Protection from the forces of the sea by offshore islands, reefs, and/or strandflats; Beaches from which crafts can embark and disembark preferably in different directions; and, The proximity of observation posts to the sea.
