The Musée Condé's Holy Family (Madonna del Velo) (also known as the Madonna di Loreto) previously believed to be a copy, now seems to be Raphael's original. The two reasons given for this judgment are: 1) the presence of a small number in the left-hand corner of the painting indicating that it was in the Borghese collection which was virtually intact up to the time of the Napoleonic invasion; 2) results of an x-ray examination show that the figure of Joseph is painted over a window and it is highly unlikely that a copyist would have gone so far as to copy overpainting as such. -- AATA
