Abstract
This paper considers the interface between science and conservation at the British Museum during the nineteenth century. Research in the archives of the Museum has revealed a number of cases where eminent scientists from outside the Museum were consulted for advice and assistance in problems of preservation. A tradition of scientists, restorers and curators all contributing to the preservation and restoration of objects in the Museum can be traced back to at least the first half of the nineteenth century.
