Abstract
Conservation Science is a recent addition to the range of activities at the Tate Gallery. It is closely linked to other conservation work and provides analytical and environmental support, which is particularly important for preventive conservation. Progress has been slow because it has relied on external funding for any new initiatives and continuity of funding remains a problem. Conservation science is leading to a better understanding of the works of art in the collection and a better appreciation of their condition. This in turn affects attitudes to their care and preservation.
