Abstract
The role of the conservation scientist is to act as an interpreter between science and conservation. Since 1919 scientists in the British Museum have been struggling with this role. By Carrying our research into deterioration and conservation they have contributed much to the long term preservation of the collection. By working with staff outside conservation they have been able to extend their involvement in collection care and have a real impact on the Museum.
