Abstract
Methyl bromide fumigations of 1-ton units of shelled peanuts in bulk containers made of corrugated paper and of a 1-ton stack in burlap bags were compared at a fumigant dosage of 32 mg/liter. Penetration of the fumigant into containers was slower than into bags but the resulting concentration of gas was adequate to kill larvae of the almond moth. Cadra cautella (Walker), and Indian meal moth, Plodia interpunctella (Hueber), adults of the red flour beetle, Tribolium castaneum (Herbst), the merchant grain beetle, Oryzaephilus mercator (Fauvel), and 0- to 3-day-old eggs of the red flour beetle exposed near the center of each container and of the stack of peanuts. Samples of peanuts taken after fumigation from the containers had lower total bromide residues and a higher percentage of germination than samples taken from the bags. The amount of residue and the reduction in the germination were directly related to the concentration of fumigant to which the peanuts were exposed.
