The presence and abundance of stones and marbles of Greek origin in Venice is quite remarkable, and historically to connect with the removals (and the following reemployment) of large amounts of stony materials from archeological sites of Italy, Greece and Asia Minor and particularly, with the sack of Constantinople made by the Venetians at the beginning of the XIIIth century, during the IVth Crusade. Of all the true Greek marbles identified in Venetian Monuments, those of Imettan and Pentelic type and the Macedonian Grays are very abundant; rarer are the whites from the Greek Islands and the Cipollino from Caristos; very rare is the Red Antique. Of the Greek stones, very common are the Green Antique and the Green Antique Porphyry, while rare are the Skyros and the Chian Portasanta rubble stones (breccias). The commonest deterioration causes and forms of all the aforementioned materials in Venice have been considered, also in connection with a statistic study made on 65 Venetian monuments.
