This article summarizes results obtained on various aspects of study of collagen structure and properties, which may conveniently be divided into the following sections: distribution of collagen in the phyla; collagen fibers in skeletal tissues; collagen in fossils; collagen fibers in embryonic and developing connective tissue; the interaction of soluble collagen with other molecules; and the polypeptide chain-configuration in collagen.
