Ochre beds of Bourgogne around Auxerre are found in a band of mid-cretaceous terrain extending from the Ardennes to the Nievre. Ochres in the Cher, derived from glauconite, were known since antiquity: Pliny pointed out the ochre mine of the Gauls in Berry. In a 1940 paper The Ochre Industry, F. Pupil names the Yonne and the Cher as the richest ochre regions. The Dutch in the 16th and 17th centuries imported large quantities of ochre producing soil, from which they made red ochre sold as Prussian red. In 1817, Berry ochre was reputed far superior to that of other countries. Production, however, went into decline and by 1860 all mining had ceased in Berry.
