<i>Project Naming </i> is a trilingual Web exhibition and searchable photographic database (http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/inuit/) available in English, French, and Inuktitut. The project is a collaborative effort involving the Nunavut Sivuniksavut Training Program (a college program based in Ottawa that serves Inuit youth from Nunavut); the Government of Nunavut’s Department of Culture, Language, Elders and Youth (CLEY); and Library and Archives Canada (LAC). Since 2002, more than 4000 photographs depicting the Inuit have been digitized and added to a database in the <i>Project Naming</i> Web site (the photographs were selected from various public and private collections held by LAC). While the photographs provide a visual documentation of the rapid changes that have impacted every aspect of Inuit life over the last century, the names of the majority of Inuit depicted in the pictures are not known or recorded. The goals of <i>Project Naming</i> are threefold: first, to foster intergenerational dialogue between Inuit youth and Elders; second, to gather historical information about LAC’s photographic collections and identify the Inuit whose names would otherwise remain unknown and “lost” forever; and third, to share this knowledge with the <i>Nunavummiut</i> (people of Nunavut) as well as the rest of Canada to promote a better understanding and appreciation of Inuit culture and history.
