Abstract
This paper describes the Pukik Local Cultural Committee and its goals and approach in fostering preservation and transmission of the culture and traditions of the Nunavimmiut (Inuit from Nunavik, northern Quebec, Canada). Various projects carried out from 2005 to 2007 are described: re-covering of a qajaq (kayak); making a tupiq (sealskin tent); building a qarmaq (semi-underground shelter); and building an umiaq (a large multi-person skin watercraft). These hands-on, practical projects were found to be the best way to engage the local participants and create a sense of pride in their ancestral roots and traditions.
