In 2004, the Mashantucket Pequot Museum and Research Center (MPMRC) was awarded a 2-year Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) National Leadership Grant to develop the project <i>Northeast Native Museum and Cultural Center Leadership Consortium</i>. The project created a partnership among seven tribal museums and cultural centers in the Northeastern United States, and offered them the following capacity-building opportunities: annual conferences, an internship program, PastPerfect database training, a Web site, and specific program assistance by MPMRC staff in the form of workshops. From the beginning, the partners identified collections care as one of their primary needs. We developed workshops and other learning opportunities for each partner to meet their specific requests. The project provided the partners with information, resources, and opportunities to further develop methods of preserving their cultural heritage. It also encouraged and developed relationships among the participants.
