Traditional technology for processing skin has been highly dynamic over the years, with each generation adding elements or changing features. These changes were justified as improvements, or were related to the availability of materials, demands of modernization, intercultural exchange, or individual preference. Traditional knowledge is increasingly important today, as museums take on responsibility for safeguarding both its tangible and intangible aspects. The challenges of preserving Aboriginal garments are related to the methods and substances used in the processing of their materials. When it comes to the management, handling, and treatment of Aboriginal skin artifacts, it is essential to understand and interpret the various aspects of the materials and substances used, and the effect they may have on the preservation of artifacts. Establishing links between the technological aspects of skin processing and the visual and analytical characterization and identification of the skin materials requires the input of traditional knowledge supported by humanistic and scientific research.
