This article describes, from the perspective of conservators, the development of a touring exhibit and community outreach program featuring 40 objects from the National Museums of Scotland (NMS) Tlicho Dene collection dating from the 1850s. This project was carried out by NMS in collaboration with the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre (PWNHC), Northwest Territories, Canada and the Tlicho government and community members. The Tlicho people have recently negotiated a land rights claim and established self-government. Both heritage institutions were keen to work with them at such a significant time to encourage and develop greater awareness of Tlicho culture. The conservators involved took a flexible “How do we facilitate saying yes?” approach to the whole project, recognizing the importance and significance of making these artifacts more widely accessible to the Tlicho people.
