The ideological approach of the Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in to material culture can appear contrary to a conservator’s view of conservation. While we live and work in the same modern world, our methods of conservation are rooted in very different cultures. A better understanding of the Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in view of material culture may help increase the relevance and success of collaborative ventures with conservators. The myth, rather than the medium, receives higher value in Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in culture. Care for an artifact may mean jeopardizing its physical condition in order to nurture the knowledge associated with it. This ultimately ensures its existence for generations. It is often not the artifact that is fragile; it is the knowledge that the artifact has to share that can be fragile. Balancing preservation of an object with preservation of a people requires a unique skill set. The Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in Heritage Department is in the process of developing a traditional knowledge policy, has a unique collections management policy, and actively pursues conservation by working with Elders and youth out on the land. As a self-governing First Nation, the Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in are in a unique position in Canada to enact legislation that would ensure a culturally appropriate approach to their collections.
