Abstract
Land claims, the research ethics process described in the 1996 Report of the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples, Appendix E: Ethical Guidelines for Research, and the 1992 Report of the Task Force on Museums and First Peoples (Turning the Page: Forging New Partnerships Between Museums and First Peoples) have all influenced policy at the Canadian Museum of Civilization (CMC) in areas of repatriation and human remains. Policy changes have included the incorporation of Aboriginal protocols into museum storage and display methods, and the provision of specialized collections care training to Aboriginal interns. These innovations have been the hallmarks of CMC’s approach to the fusion of technical and traditional methods in artifact conservation. At this stage, beyond cooperating with Aboriginal constituencies at the community level, the next challenge for the conservation profession as a whole lies in changing its demographic. Quite simply, the conservation profession needs to attract more persons of Aboriginal heritage to its ranks. This article describes the principles and practices of employment equity as a means of achieving this goal.
