Presents an introduction to the pictorial works on textile support that Salvador Dalí created over his 70-year career. The paintings reviewed include those given by the artist during his lifetime to his Foundation and to the city of Figueres, Spain, along with his legacy currently on deposit at the Gala-Salvador Dalí foundation. The paintings represent stages in Dalí’s technical and artistic development, provide examples of specific textile support deteriorations, or have been the subject of a particular restoration treatment. The painting “The Apotheosis of the Dollar” is reviewed for both its conservation and post-conservation treatment. The painting over time had been repeatedly nailed and re-nailed to frames, or alternatively removed from its stretcher to be stored or transported rolled, resulting in serious damage. An aluminum frame system was devised to allow the canvas to be screwed onto the metal, avoiding the damage caused by frequent re-nailings to a stretcher, and permitting a perfect tension level that has never needed adjustment. The frequent travel and exhibition of Dalí’s work is seen as the principal deterioration factor to his paintings as a whole, and particularly to those from his Surrealist period.
