Seven Mi’kmaq baskets made by my grandmothers are the focus of a project now being developed at the Canadian Museum of Civilization in Gatineau, Quebec: <i>Grandmothers’ Mi’kmaq Baskets — Isabelle (Augustine) Simon and Agnes (Thomas) Augustine</i>. By examining the life stories of my grandmothers, we can open a fuller picture of their basket-making pursuits, including where they obtained the wood for making baskets and where they had to go to sell the baskets. The link between the baskets and the knowledge of my grandmothers reflects a long relationship of learning and studying the seasonal changes and the environment, as well as the characteristics and behaviour of the trees used for making baskets. The transfer of traditional knowledge involves listening to stories and legends of our ancestors and learning their skills. All cultural ancestral material should be treated with respect no matter to whom it belongs or in what context the object was used. However, sacred or ceremonial materials carry with them additional protocols related to the gender of the handler and daily, seasonal, and annual cycles that dictate when the materials can be handled or stored.
