Treating out-sized works of art involves choices of consolidation methods and structural reinforcement, as well as examining environmental parameters and working with budgetary and human constraints. The author illustrates three approaches to the problem through case studies on works by Francesco Bassano (S. Luigi dei Francesi, Rome, Italy); Galileo Chini’s “Allegory of Spring” at the Modern Art Gallery in Rome; and Pietro da Cortona, et al., preparatory cartoons for wall hangings, Palazzo Barberini, Rome. Reducing the heavy use of materials, improving application methods, and simplifying all procedures are stressed.
