Abstract
Some late 19th-century Shaker communities manufactured small cardboard boxes covered with poplar cloth and lined with padded satin. Poplar cloth is woven on a loom with a cotton warp, inserting poplar splints and using a tabby weave. The preparation of the poplar splint is the most difficult part of the process. Modern applications in home furnishings of this historic craft are detailed.
