In 1983, the Minister of Welfare, Public Health, and Culture of the Netherlands funded a special project concerning the recovery and protection of a group of megalithic tombs situated in the northeastern part of the country. In 1986-1987, after appropriate studies, it was decided to make only 18 out of 54 surviving tombs accessible to the public. They were selected on the basis of their characteristics, scientific importance, geographical dispersion, and location. A local museum was rebuilt as the National Megalithic Tomb Information Centre. It provides information and documentation. When the project is completed, the tombs will serve as an example of care for archaeological monuments and the socialization of archaeology.
