Buckskin dresses are traditional with Southern Plains Indian women, and have evolved from everyday wear with many variations in style. Construction of a dress is illustrated in a style worn by the Kiowa in Oklahoma, including the basic pattern, accessories, beadwork, fringe, and feather embellishments. The preparation, selection, and care of skins are also described. Beaded decorations, the greatest challenge in making these dresses, consist of medallions, strips, and edging.
