The creation of the Rivaud district is part of a local urbanization policy to renew the historic city of Poitiers. The renewal, begun several years ago, combines the restoration of the architectural heritage with housing renovation, and the creation of accompanying public services. The aim is to bring to life the historic center as well as to preserve it. Describes the site and reviews the development of a commercial center. According to the architect, Yves-Jean Laval, the Rivaud development has been planned to achieve five things: 1) to recreate the urban areas; 2) to take full advantage of the city's heritage; 3) to make the site stand out; 4) to group together the facilities necessary for day-to-day living; and 5) to make public buildings visible.
