Good collections management is essential in order to run a museum as a cost-effective business. Up until recently, presentation and education were priorities although preservation is necessary for these activities to occur. The first priority of a museum should be the development of basic registration procedures. Four categories are defined for objects. The first is the basic collection with unique objects of value. The second category includes objects important for presentation value. The archives collection includes objects important to the collection for contextual reasons. The fourth category are objects to be deaccessioned. Objects to be acquired should be vetted by directors, curators and conservators for recommendations on condition and authenticity. Storage costs must be considered and long-term policy goals should be the deciding factors. Good display techniques are important and travelling exhibitions need to be reconsidered with respect to preservation. Exhibitions should be professionally organized by the curator to provide and enjoyable learning experience.
