The background and provisions of New York Local Law 10, a law enacted to protect pedestrians by requiring periodic inspection of building facades, are described in the context of potential effects on historic buildings. Despite early concerns that owners would simply remove non-structural building ornament rather than undertake more costly restoration, anecdotal evidence suggests that restoration has, in general, been the preferred course of action.
