Abstract
Digital 3D reconstructions made by using laser scanner triangulation are presented. The aim is to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of this tool in zooarchaeological and paleontological analysis, and its potential for digital conservation-restoration of fossil remains, and other types of materiality. To that end, there was developed an electromechanical support that allowed the 3 D laser to work in a continuous form on the surface of the scanned bones. The process w11s captured with a video camera into a specialized software that reads 3D data. A series of images was obtained from current reference collections and fossil samples, allowing to develop the 3D models. Among the advantages of 3D laser scanning is the possibility to work with specimens with low direct manipulation; nevertheless among the disadvantage it should be pointed out the degree of detail that taxonomic identification phases require in zooarchaeology and in paleontology.
