Abstract
One of the most important preservation works carried out at the lnstituto del Patrimonio Cultural de Espana during an internship in 2011 is presented. This work describes the treatments undertaken to a nineteenth century Japanese album, that belongs to the institute. It is considered a master piece because of its meticulously hand painted photographs, done by Kusakabe Kimbei, one of the greatest Japanese photographers of the time. Even though the binding showed a good conservation condition, the photographs required more protection. The procedure involved the renovation of deteriorated sheets, which were directly affecting the images. These were replaced by new acid free ones, in order to recover their original purpose of protecting each photograph. Finally, the group of photographs became stabilized and at the same time the aesthetic value of the object was recovered without treating the binding.
