Ancient Chinese bronze-casting has never been equaled in excellence; this includes the bronze mirrors. Mirrors were made from an alloy of copper, tin, and lead, the usual proportions being 71 percent copper, 26 percent tin, and 3 percent lead. This high-tin alloy, close to speculum metal, produced a whitish bronze, well suited to reflection. Early Chinese authors used mirrors as a literary metaphor with three meanings.
